The threat of Tropical Storm Isaac has forced the postponement of this weekend’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic.The two-day event was due to be held on Saturday and Sunday in the Caribbean Island’s capital of Santo Domingo.Isaac dumped heavy rain over the Caribbean yesterday on its track towards the Dominican Republic and flood -prone Haiti.The storm had top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and is forecast to become a hurricane by today. Computer forecast models showed Isaac moving west-northwest across the Caribbean Island early tomorrow.Bermuda’s eight-member junior cycling team was due to depart for the Dominican Republic today.A Bermuda Bicycle Association statement read: “The president of the Caribbean Cycling Confederation, Mr Trevor Bailey of St Vincent, today advised the Bermuda Bicycle Association that the 2012 Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships scheduled for this weekend in Dominican Republic will be postponed due to the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac. The event will be rescheduled for either September or October once the organisers from the Federación Dominicana de Ciclismo find a suitable date.“Bermuda’s team will hope to maintain their cycling form for this unspecified period as they have been focused on being at peak physical shape for this competition. A new date is expected to be announced in the coming days.”Representing Bermuda at this year’s junior regional cycling championships are Daniel Oatley, Nathaniel Hartwig, Gabby Arnold, Vashon Cann, Mark Godfrey, Deshi Smith, Daelan Richardson and Nico Barclay.Hartwig is competing in the boys 15-16 time trial and road race along with Oatley. Cann and Godfrey are riding in the boys 17-18 time trial and road race while Arnold is competing in the girls time trial and road race.
