Bermuda’s Nicole Mitchell and Karen Bordage grabbed gold and silver in the NatWest Island Games women's cycling road race in a photo finish.Guernsey's Ann Bowditch was third across the line.Mitchell finished in a time of two hours, eight minutes, 19.16 seconds while Smith hit the tape in 2:08:19.21. Bowditch finished third in 2:08:19.60.Bermuda claimed gold in the team event, thanks to the two female medal winners. Guersney grabbed silver and Jersey clinched bronze.A jubilant Mitchell praised her teammates’ tactical awareness for helping Bermuda finish first.“The feeling of winning still hasn’t sunk in yet, it’s been six months of preparation and this is the result of the hard work we all have put in,” said Mitchell.“We tried to break away from the pack early on and when they pulled us back in we stuck to our plan and maintained our pace.“Karen went back out on the front and they let her go and set the pace, so when they pulled her in again it saved my legs in the sense that I didn’t have to exert more energy than I needed.“We are locals but it’s still incredibly hot out there and we work days so training in these conditions isn’t always ideal.“I wasn’t sure in the end if I had left it too late in the sprint; it’s an uphill finish and I wanted to time it just right so it worked out in the end.”Bermuda’s third female rider, Earlena Ingham (2:25:24.41) finished 12th.In the men’s road race, Guernsey’s Tobyn Horton claimed gold in a time of two hours, 49 minutes, 29 seconds after a late surge saw him claim line honours.Jersey’s Richard Tanguy was the leader for the majority of the race before a small chasing pack, including Horton, tracked him down with 30 kilometres to go.Horton made his move at Frog Lane roundabout and never looked back, with Torkil Veyhe of Faroe Islands (2:49:40.46) coming second and Andrew Roache of Isle of Man (2:49:40.49) finishing third.Shannon Lawrence (3:00.01) was Bermuda's top rider finishing 13th, while Geri Mewitt (3:00:15.27) came 19th.Lawrence said: “It was very hot out there, we knew it would be hot but not like this. We were fairly relaxed because we knew the guy that broke away would be reeled in at some point, and in the end our decision to not go with the small pack that hunted him down cost us.“It was too much for us to do and that was the difference. The competition was great, it was nice to see everyone perform well and hopefully those that were involved in accidents throughout the race return home healthy.”Guernsey won the men's’ team event, with Isle of Man and Jersey rounding out the podium places.
