Bermuda's Shannon Lawrence won bronze in this morning's cycling men's time triall

Bermuda’s Shannon Lawrence claimed bronze in the men's time trial at Clearwater in St David's yesterday.Lawrence, who was Bermuda’s top finisher in the men’s road race on Sunday, finished in a time of one hour, 42.53 seconds, half a second ahead of fourth place Tobyn Horton of Guernsey.Horton won Sunday’s road race.Andrew Roche of Isle of Man bettered his third place finish in the road race, winning the gold in a time of 56 minutes, 44.58 seconds.Torkil Veyhe (59:48.66) of Faroe Islands was close behind and grabbed his second silver of the Games to go along with the road racing silver.“It was extremely hot out there today, you had to keep in mind that the race wasn’t about finishing but rather the time you put in so you couldn’t really lose focus out there,” said Lawrence.“After Sunday’s race we all were aware that it would be hot so we prepared mentally for it and in the end the focus definitely paid off.“In time trial racing you can’t afford to worry about what others have done, you have to just put your head down and ride as fast as you can in order to beat the clock.“You can know what time you need to beat but if you don’t manage the race as it goes along then you put yourself in a very difficult position.“It’s not so much racing the competitors as it is racing the clock, so I’m pleased with how I rode and we will see how things happen on the final day on Thursday.”Roache’s time was more than enough to grab his country the team title, with a total time of three hours, one minute, 8.75 seconds.Silver went to Guernsey (3:03:48.34), while Jersey (3:04:33.41) captured bronze. In the women’s time trial, Ann Bowditch, who was third in the road race, claimed gold in a time of 57 minutes, 29.66 seconds for Guernsey, with Jersey’s Susan Townsend (57:43.22) and Susanna Skylv Sorensen (57:47.98) of the Faroe Islands round out the podium places.Road race medallists Nicole Mitchell (gold) and Karen Bordage (silver) finished 11th and 12th respectively in the women's divisions to lead the local contingent.Guernsey (1:55:25.66) claimed team gold, ahead of Jersey (1:56:33.10) and Western Isles (1:58:12.45) who snatched silver and bronze respectively.Cycling continues on Thursday with the criterium in Hamilton.
