Dominique Mayho and Caitlin Conyers were crowned the men’s and women’s champions at the Bermuda National Road Race Championships in Prospect, Devonshire, yesterday.

Mayho, of VT Construction — Madison, lived up to his billing as pre-race favourite with a strong performance, pulling away from the pack on the final circuit to finish in a time of 2hr 56min 23sec.

His team-mate Kwame Curling came second in 2:57:19 while Conor White, who pulled off a surprise win in the Bermuda National Time-Trial Championships last weekend, was third. The Winners Edge rider posted a time of in 2:57:20.

It was a close battle between Curling and White, with both riders charging up the Frog Lane hill to Prospect in the battle for second.

In the women’s race Conyers exceeded her expectations of a top-three finish by winning her maiden road race title in a time of 1:56:10.

It was the Bicycle Works rider’s second successive win, having claimed the national time-trial championship in Southside last weekend, adding the Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix title she won in April.

Nicole Mitchell, of Winners Edge, came second in 1:56:13, with Rose-Anna Hoey, of VT Construction — Madison, placing third in 1:58:52.

Matthew Oliveira continues to dominate the junior boys’ category, as he and Kaden Hopkins, of Winners Edge, distanced themselves from the rest of the field on the first three laps.

Oliveira claimed the win, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Hopkins in 1:39:42, with Nicholas Narraway, of Winners Edge, rounding out the podium in 1:54:37.

Narraway was put under intense pressure from his team-mate Alexander Miller, who came fourth, and fifth-place Ziani Burgesson, of VT Construction — Madison.

Alyssa Rowse, the lone junior female competitor, was unable to finish, leaving the title vacated.
