Narraway claims overall honours in South Carolina

The island's top cyclists continue to make an impression on the international scene, with 17-year-old Nicholas Narraway pulling off an impressive performance on Saturday when he took overall honours in the Pro, 1,2 category in the 58-mile Hincapie Spring Series road race in Greenville, South Carolina.

Despite the youngster being eligible to race in the Junior 17-18 category this year, he chose to step up to the open category 2 to gain more experience against bigger fields with more experienced riders.

His decision clearly paid off in this early season event as he positioned himself in an early breakaway of five or six riders and then no doubt raised a lot of eyebrows as he sprinted to victory after holding off the 100-strong field of riders.

The result will clearly boost his confidence as he begins a busy year of racing, including the defence of his road race and time-trial Caribbean Championship titles and bodes well for the future of Bermuda teams in international competition.

This week, Kaden Hopkins, Dominique Mayho and Conor White will start the seven-day Vuelta Independencia Stage Race in Dominican Republic, while two other promising juniors, Alexander Miller and Liam Flannery, head to Northern Georgia to compete in the prestigious three-day Tour of the Southern Highlands Stage Race.

“The racing that our athletes have recently been a part of and the upcoming competitions are a demonstration of the commitment our riders have to their development as elite cyclists,” Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Bicycle Association president, said.

“The commitment that they have each made gives our association great confidence that 2020 and the coming years are full of potential. We anticipate that their stories will motivate with our junior riders to reach to similar levels.”
