Caitlin Conyers completed a full house of 2023 national cycling titles after prevailing in the Criterium Championships in St David’s yesterday.

After already winning both the road race and time-trial last month, the 32-year-old dethroned defending champion Gabriella Arnold, who had to settle for third after racing without her usual road bike and still recovering from a recent crash.

It was left to the ever-improving Panzy Olander to take the challenge to Conyers, who despite suffering a punctured tyre midway through the race, managed to recover to ultimately claim a convincing victory.

“I’m very happy to complete the treble of titles,” said Conyers, who was due to fly straight to El Salvador after the race ahead of the cycling races at the Central American and Caribbean Games, in which she forms part of a four-strong Bermuda team alongside Arnold, Kaden Hopkins and Conor White.

“There was a moment I got a front flat, but luckily with Criterium rules you get a chance to lap out so I was able to get a replacement tyre and get back in the race.

“Myself and Panzy worked together for a lot of the race and then when we managed to lap the rest of field, I decided to go for it and attacked with three laps or so left to go.

“I was so excited to see Panzy on my wheel throughout the race. Myself and Gabby established an early gap, but she got back on and then I looked back expecting to see Gabby and it was actually Panzy, which is awesome because it’s amazing to see people developing like she has.

“She’s only riding for only six months or so and it’s really exciting because if she sticks with it, and I hope she does, she has a lot of potential.

“I wouldn’t normally be doing a Criterium on the day of flying out for an international event, but I wanted that title and to be able to wear the Bermuda flag as champion on my jersey, so it’s just awesome.”

There was also title joy for White, who sealed a comprehensive success in the Open Male category.

Having been pipped to both time-trial and road race honours by Kaden Hopkins and finishing as runner-up to Nicholas Pilgrim in last year’s race, the 23-year-old had an added incentive in his last opportunity to claim a national title.

The race looked to be developing into a two-way tussle for supremacy between White and Dominique Mayho, only for the latter to suffer two flat tyres and be forced to change his bike, all but ending his challenge.

As a result, White was left to race solo for the final ten laps or so, with Mayho finishing second and Stephen Ryan outsprinting Michael Terceira for third place.

“Unfortunately, it was not the greatest turnout but I’m more than happy to take the victory because that was the main goal,” said White, who lived up to expectations as the overwhelming favourite in the absence of Hopkins, Pilgrim, Nicholas Narraway and Liam Flannery.

“Whether it’s two people or 20 competing, I just wanted the win to be able to have that flag on my jersey for the next year.

“It was a shame not to have Dom challenging until the end, but even when I was by myself I still tried to ride as hard as I could, because it was good preparation for the CAC Games races coming up.”

There was also a dominant display from Cameron Morris, who came out on top in the male junior category.

Having led as part of two-rider breakaway with Jake Smith from the early stages, Morris finally picked his moment in the closing laps to pull away from his rival and clinch victory.

Smith settled for the runner-up spot in a mass sprint to the finish, holding off the late challenge of Gordon Smith, who completed the podium places.

Skye Ferguson took the top honours in the corresponding female division, while Kelise Wade also triumphed in the female 13-14 race division.
