Matt Boys beats Tyler Butterfield in VT Construction race
Bermuda’s cycling community warmed up for the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race on Friday by taking each other on in the VT Construction Road Race.
Organised by new father Dominique Mayho, the race on Sunday turned into an easy victory for Australian Matt Boys, who won the Sinclair Packwood race last year, with a winning margin of just under a minute over the returning Tyler Butterfield.
After seven laps and 48.25 miles, it was Boys who had the stronger legs to cross the line in 1hr 56min 27sec to take the A category. Steven Smith finished third in 1:59:01 with youngster Dylan Eiselt and Will Drea rounding out the top five.
Wayne Scott produced a fantastic ride to finish sixth overall and win the B category after finishing with the same time as Drea on 1:59:43. Alan Mooney (2:09:01) and McQuinn Burch (2:09:46) completed the B category podium.
Category C, which also featured plenty of young riders, delivered an exciting finish with seven competitors contesting the sprint.
Tracy Wright took bragging rights after crossing the line in 1:31:17, with Gianluca Bortoli (1:31.20) second and Sanchez Smith (1:31:20) finishing third.
In the women’s race, Arlene MacGuinness (1:52:59) secured first place ahead of Skye Ferguson.
Some of Bermuda’s professional cyclists have also been in action in the past week with Nicholas Narraway finishing 28th in the prestigious Memorial Valenciaga race in Spain.
Covering 165 kilometres across seven steep mountain passes, Narraway’s performance in the ninth round of the Copa series was his best to date and he was pleased with the performance.
“After last week’s race, where I made the five-man breakaway that ended up being the winning move but cracked with 1km to go, pace was on my mind,” Narraway said.
“There was a lot of movement on the descents and climbs and I kept getting pushed back, which meant I had to fight my way to the front each time, burning unnecessary energy.
“I didn’t make the front group at the end, but I’m happy with 28th. It’s my best result in a COPA race so far.”
Kaden Hopkins took to the streets of the United States on Sunday, finishing 38th in the New York Gran Premio.
Hopkins, who competed for the Prestige Cycling Foundation Team from Puerto Rico as a guest rider, finished 7:47 behind winner Sean Christian.
