Cyclists Nic Narraway and Kaden Hopkins produce huge wins
Bermudian cyclists Nicholas Narraway and Kaden Hopkins produced huge performances in different parts of the world on Sunday.
Hopkins picked up the race win in the Grand Prix Jack Auto in Guadeloupe, while Narraway won the king of the mountains jersey after finishing second in the Ronda Ciclista al Maestrat in Spain.
Racing for his Spanish-based team, Tenerife–Bike Point–La Sede, Narraway was part of a two-man breakaway that led the race for much of the 158-kilometre course. The race is known for its steep climbs and narrow back roads, with Narraway earning enough points in the hills to take the King of the Mountains title.
The final stretch came down to a sprint between Narraway and Puerto Rican rider Christopher Morales, with Morales just edging the win on the line.
With only 55 of the 114 starters making it to the finish, the race lived up to its reputation as being one of the more difficult on the Spanish calendar.
While Narraway was beaten narrowly in his sprint, Hopkins showed the stronger legs in his finish to hold off Colombian rider Esnaider Arley Baez at the end of the 180km race around the roads of Guadeloupe.
The 20-lap race also proved a lucrative one for Hopkins, with cash prizes given out for the leader on every circuit. With Hopkins and Baez forming a two-man breakaway for much of the race and agreeing to alternate their lap victories, the Bermudian cyclist finished the race on top of the podium and with his bank balance boosted.
Hopkins is next in action in a four-day stage race in Guadeloupe this week, while Narraway’s next race will be in the Bermuda National Championships next month.
