Presidents Cup cycling race postponed
The Presidents Cup, a cycling race around the island scheduled for Sunday morning, has been postponed because of the unavailability of a police escort.
The Bermuda Bicycle Association said that the race organisers had no choice but to defer the event.
“The Bermuda Bicycle Association wishes to advise that the Presidents Cup Road Race scheduled for this Sunday has been postponed to Sunday, October 26,” the BBA said.
“Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to secure the required police motor escort for this weekend.
“We recognise the many competing demands on resources following recent activity on the island and fully understand the challenges in scheduling support.
“For the safety of both riders and the motoring public, it is in everyone’s best interest to reschedule the event.
“We look forward to staging the Presidents Cup on its new date and thank the public and our partners for their understanding.”
The overseas-based quartet of Conor White, Nicholas Narraway, Kaden Hopkins and Gabriella Arnold, were on the island to compete in the race.
The four were using the race as part of their preparations for the Caribbean Elite Road Cycling Championships in Belize.
Race director Deborah Titterton Narraway indicated that some of them might still be on island for the rescheduled event.
“There is a possibility that our elite riders will still be around on October 26,” she said.
“Conor White and Kaden Hopkins will still be here but others like Gabby Arnold have already indicated that they won’t be around.
“With Arnold not available for the rescheduled race, it will leave Panzy Olander with no competition as it was just the two of them for the senior women at the BBA’s National Criterium Championships last Sunday.”
