Conor White eyes third Presidents Cup
Conor White goes out in pursuit of his third Presidents Cup title when the rescheduled race takes place tomorrow morning.
White is the only top rider taking part in the event that was meant to be held on October 5, but was postponed because of the unavailability of a police escort.
Gabriella Arnold and Nicholas Narraway have gone back to their overseas bases, while Kaden Hopkins is on an off-season break and will miss out on the 53-mile race.
Race director Deborah Titterton Narraway gave an insight into the riders to watch out for.
“We’ve got Connor White, Matt Boyes and Dominique Mayho as the leading contenders in the Open Male category,” Titterton Narraway said.
“Alexander Miller is a dark horse who seems to be making his way back into the cycling scene.
“In the Junior Male category, the competition should be good between Jackson Langley, Ollie Hayward, Dylan Eiselt and Keon Stevens.
“It’s going to be a good one in the juniors; I think Jackson can probably hang with the open men. Dylan and Ollie will give it a good try, but there's going to be strong competition in the Junior Male.
“In the Open Female, we have only Panzy Olander. I don’t think Panzy competes necessarily for women; she’s just trying to better herself against the entire category.
“Of the 35 entries we have received, we don’t have any junior females. Most of the girls are at school overseas and the ones around are too young.
“It’s a tough course because it’s an island-wide race. Some of the younger girls are not quite up to that yet; they'll be working their way up.”
The race starts on Front Street and concludes at Southlands Park. Because of roadworks on Middle Road, the course has been altered.
“We are starting on Front Street and they go all the way into St David’s,” the race director said.
“They come back up South Shore, all the way to Dockyard and then back down South Shore to Southlands Park.”
