The island’s twelfth person lost on the roads this year in a single vehicle crash early Monday morning has been identified by police as Treadwell Kirkland Butterfield, 53, a retired footballer and the son of a former government minister.

Mr Butterfield, who worked at the Care Learning Centre in Pembroke founded by his mother, Neletha Butterfield, was also a former Dandy Town and Bermuda Under-19 defender.

Mr Butterfield became programme director at Care Learning on Mount Hill in 2017 after his mother, a former environment minister under the Progressive Labour Party government, stepped down.

He was pronounced dead in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after sustaining a serious head injury shortly before 2am in a motorcycle crash on Cavendish Road in Devonshire, just east of the junction with Shelton Road.

Police said Mr Butterfield was driving west when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the kerb.

He was thrown from the motorcycle and found unresponsive in the road by officers.

Police gave CPR until the arrival of Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service staff, who continued life-saving efforts until Mr Butterfield was taken to the hospital.

The BPS gave condolences to his loved ones, with a family liaison officer appointed to assist them.

The matter is under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have information is asked to contact Pc Junior Warner at 717-2372 or by e-mail at jwarner@bps.bm.

The public can use the main police number, 295-0011, use the BPS online community reporting portal, or speak with a familiar police officer.
