Family business faces up to tough times

Painting construction biz owner Chris Cassidy

Chris and Penny Cassidy say they are having to advertise for the first time since starting their small painting, maintenance and construction business more than a decade ago.It may be a sign of just how hard it’s getting for Bermuda’s small businesses to stay afloat in this economy, especially those in the hard-hit construction industry.Mr Cassidy said his company Keystone Painting & Maintenance once employed six workers full-time all year-round.But they have all had to be let go as he’s seen business fall off dramatically in the past year to 18 months.Mr Cassidy said his company has always had a list of regular, loyal customers, but even that business has dropped off.He said he once had building projects that would last a year or more and has built several homes from the ground up.“We have been in business for about 12 years now, but have never had to advertise before,” said Mr Cassidy, who expanded the company after leaving a full-time marketing job at the Bermuda Telephone Company.“Hopefully though we can turn it around and employ some of the many unemployed out there.”Mr Cassidy said there are many others like him out there, who aren’t on the Government’s unemployment list, but are certainly underemployed. He said he and his wife pride themselves on their business ethic, honesty and quality of their work and make themselves available to clients on-call 24/7.“We do it all - building, masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, everything you need, so there’s no need to call anyone else.” he said.“And if you have a problem in the middle of the night or the weekend, we will come and help you. No job is too small.”Mr. Cassidy said his smaller company will now focus on home renovation, painting and maintenance projects rather than construction jobs.Keystone’s services include: painting, roofs, woodwork, minor electrical work, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, tiling, and bathroom/kitchen and other renovations. For more information contact 535-6001.
