HSBC Bermuda Bank has confirmed that no staff will be affected by HSBC Private Bank’s decision to cease offering its services to US residents living outside the US.In a statement issued yesterday, an HSBC Bermuda Bank said: “There is no impact to staffing locally as a result of this HSBC Private Bank policy decision.”On Wednesday the bank said it had conducted a review of services provided to US private bank clients from locations outside of the US and it believed that those clients would be better served by its private banking teams in the US.HSBC said that a team of advisers would help those affected clients through the transition. This follows an announcement by the US Internal Revenue Service who said that it would give foreign financial institutions until June 30, 2013 to start complying with a new law to prevent offshore tax evasion by Americans under a phased-in schedule of compliance. The planned new rules would oblige non-US financial institutions to disclose details of wealthy US clients or face a withholding tax on their US assets, effectively putting the burden of disclosure on the bank rather than the client.
