Make it happen

Police search through the greens of St Georges Golf Course early Christmas Day after a 20 year old man was gunned down in the area ( Photo by Glenn Tucker )

On Christmas Eve, this newspaper called for the Island to use Christmas Day to celebrate a rebirth of traditional values and to come together, united, to face the many problems it has and will face.A few hours later, a man was shot dead. Whether this was gang-related is immaterial — on the day Christ was born, a mother lost her child. In the same editorial, this newspaper called on the One Bermuda Alliance to make some bold statements in the New Year, such as abolishing term limits.Another bold statement must be the announcement of concrete funding for Operation Ceasefire. In the immediate aftermath of the fatal shooting it was good to hear Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley saying Government would be supporting the Ceasefire initiative. This newspaper fully acknowledges that the OBA has many challenges, not least of which is dealing with a deficit in the public purse. But the new Government must find money to fund this initiative and quickly. It will not put a stop to the deadly violence overnight, but it will be a start, it will also reassure the public that positive steps are being taken. It is understood that there are a host of priorities, but putting an end to the ever increasing roll call of those killed by men carrying guns must be close to the top — it is issues like this that destroy society.
