Lyceum Preschool to move to Francis Patton Primary

Lyceum Preschool is to move onto the same property as Francis Patton Primary this September.Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith told the House of Assembly the move would reduce rent and increase the physical space offered to the school. However, she maintained that the preschool would remain a separate entity from Francis Patton.“Although they will share an address, it is important to us that both the preschool and the primary school keep their individual identities,” Dame Jennifer said.“The primary school will be entirely housed in the main building, while the preschool will occupy the current ‘infant block’, a separate building on the other side of the school field.“There may be opportunities for interaction, but that is a matter for those in charge.”Head teacher of Lyceum Preschool, Helen Turini, will remain in charge of the preschool; Francis Patton principal Garita Coddington will continue in that role.Dame Jennifer said the move would save $20,000 annually on rent by moving the school to a government-owned building, but in the first instance the relocation will lead to some expenses.Dame Jennifer also noted last year’s public discussion on the possibility of closing some public schools, saying she did not see school closures as a viable option.“I stated then that it was not our intention to close any schools,” she said. “Instead, we intend to have full utilisation of all educational resources, be they human or structures.”Useful website: www.gov.bm
