AF Smith has donated iPads to The Reading Clinic. The office solutions company donated two of the tablets to the charity and plans on donating four more to accommodate the clinic's six tutoring rooms.A spokeswoman for the clinic said that the iPads will “augment its literacy and numeracy programmes” as they will be used by staff in tutoring sessions.Executive director of TRC Dr Julie Dunstan said: “Technology alone cannot teach children the strategies they need to overcome learning difficulties but the iPad offers a unique way of reinforcing learning. Because iPads really engage students, our tutors can use a wide range of apps to keep their interest level high and develop the skills they need in a fun way.“We are very grateful to AF Smith for their generosity and support in recognising the educational value of technology in helping us develop our programmes.”TRC aids children with learning disabilities in improving their literacy and numeracy and provides approximately 6,000 professional tutoring sessions a year.Said Tim Smith, AF Smith CEO: “When Julie and her team shared with us the vital work they do with Bermuda's children, it wasn't a case of feeling obligated to get involved, we wanted to help.”“It is well known that Apple provides innovative technologies that enhance learning and the iPad, in particular, is very effective in engaging students. Our donation of two iPads is our small way of helping the students of The Reading Clinic to grow and develop.”The iPads were presented by AF Smith's Apple specialist, Kenny Pemberton. Mr Pemberton is also responsible for the office company's business-to-business sales, solutions and support.Said Dr Dunstan: “The iPad really fits in with the individualised and multisensory approach of our programmes. Every student learns differently and a strategy that works with one child may not work with another. Tools like the iPad give tutors more options and flexibility.”“For the students, apps such as spelling and math games and interactive books can provide positive reinforcement and encouragement beyond classroom drills. They quickly learn new skills and can track their progress through different levels with the help of immediate, non-threatening feedback. That helps build their confidence and self-esteem, which are a critical part of overcoming learning challenges.”The TRC tutors will also evaluate and recommend relevant apps for parents install on their own personal iPads. The clinic also plans to compile a guide to the best apps on its website.“AF Smith has generously agreed to offer the Clinic four more iPads at cost and we would love to hear from donors who would be willing to help us reach that goal,” said Dr Dunstan.
