CedarBridge’s outreach programme today aims to ‘make kindness contagious’

Big-hearted CedarBridge Academy students are celebrating their last school day before Christmas break with a day of community outreach.Today’s activities include hosting senior citizens for gifts and a lunch at the school.Explained CedarBridge deputy principal Rosemary Matthews: “Our S4 students are combining as a year to offer a senior citizens’ luncheon from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.“We have invited the majority of seniors from different rest homes all over the Island. We’re hoping to cater to 100 with soup, sandwiches, gingerbread and cake, in addition to a delicious lunch prepared and served by the students.“We’ll have entertainment as well: a student on piano, bingo, a few skits and dances at the end. Santa Claus will come and each senior will receive a gift.“It all coincides with our concept of the day, of giving back to the community, especially because Christmas can be sad for seniors who don’t have much family. We thought it our civic duty to reach out.”Principal Kalmar Richards decided to launch what is expected to be an annual event, explained teacher Shoa Bean.“She wanted teach the students about the importance and rewards of giving back,” Ms Bean said. “It’s never too early to give, and it creates school spirit as well.”S1 to S3 students will be doing various activities throughout the Island, from east to west.“We’ve split them into two groups,” Ms Bean said. “One will stay here at the school, painting, creating murals and freshening up, and the others will go out into the community.“The others will go to various primary schools and middle schools. We’ve reached out to all of them to see if our students can volunteer time to read to the children, help out with end of year celebrations and see if they need anything done in the school.”Students will offer help at different organisations and hand out small gifts around Hamilton.Added Ms Bean: “Our motto this year has been to make kindness contagious.”
