BUT: ‘We are not aware of any expansion of the school day’

The One Bermuda Alliance has responded with silence to a request to clarify its claim that it has lived up to its promise to expand the school day.

“A longer school day has been expanded, to provide more time for sports, music, arts and remedial support,” said OBA Chairman Thad Hollis in a spirited defence of his party’s first 100 days in office.

No one in public education could be found to corroborate the statement made on March 27 in response to criticism by the Progressive Labour Party that Government had broken eight promises since coming into office.

“Our Collective Agreement calls for a thirty five hour work week, which equates to a seven hour work day. As of this minute there has been no challenge to our working hours. We are not aware of any expansion of the school day,” said Mike Charles, Secretary General of the Bermuda Union of Teachers.

Government did not respond to our query either.

The OBA made the promise the extend the school day during last year’s election campaign.
