Warwick to change student entry process

Warwick Academy is to accept additional students to the school at Year Five, rather than Year Seven, in order to make the academic transition easier on pupils. The switch will take effect in September, 2014, principal Maggie McCorkell said. The school traditionally designated Year Seven as its second main point of entry — but has found that some students struggled with the transition in foreign languages, maths and music.Ms McCorkell explained: “We had feedback that some students coming in at Year Seven were finding Warwick Academy to be quite tough. Bringing the time they come in back two years will make it easier to support the transition in the primary department.“The class teacher very rapidly builds up a relationship with them, and coming in at year five also gives them a lot longer to become cohesive as a year group.”New students had formerly been joining the school at age 11 — the start of middle school — but in 2014 will start at age nine.Head of primary Maria Ward said the switch would also allow extra time for students needing booster classes. The school will still have places for students wishing to join at the Year Seven level, she added.Warwick Academy is holding an open evening for prospective Year Five parents at 6pm on October 2.
