New school year begins for students

It’s back to class today for the Island’s roughly 6,000 public education students, as schools open their doors for the 2014/15 year.

Education and Economic Development Minister Grant Gibbons will attend Dellwood Middle School this morning to welcome parents and pupils.

Last night, Shadow Education Minister and former educator Lovitta Foggo hailed the resolve of the Island’s teachers.

“I know, first hand, the challenges that come with teaching students all day, and having to balance that with raising families,” Ms Foggo said. “We appreciate the sacrifices many of you make, on a daily basis.”

Ms Foggo called on students to “keep your heads focused on your studies and your extra-curricular activities”.

“To the parents, we value your involvement,” she added.

“Your children need your support, encouragement, dedication, and love. The education system is just but one piece of the puzzle for student achievement, but our combined efforts can produce Bermuda’s best.”

The St David’s MP urged parents feeling the economic pinch to designate a responsible family member to help their children with educational commitments when needed.

“The future is bright and I wish all who participate in our education system the best for the 2014/15 school year,” Ms Foggo said.

Meanwhile, the possibility of industrial action by teachers remains “off the table”, according to a Department of Education spokeswoman.

The threat of a strike was announced last month over a disciplinary issue.

However, “progress has been made”, the spokeswoman said, with the Bermuda Union of Teachers engaged in talks with the Department, assisted by the Department of Workforce Development.
