Bermuda College is to offer potential lecturers a chance to teach at the institution.The college will hold a teaching information webinar session as part of its faculty recruitment campaign.Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, the vice-president of academic and student affairs, said that the college wanted to give potential candidates time to get the needed qualifications as some lecturers prepared for retirement.She added: “I think that this is a really great for Bermudians and spouses of Bermudians.“Very often I’m approached by people who would like to teach at the college, but they simply don’t have the qualifications, so this is a great time for people to attend these sessions and find out more about what it is like to teach at Bermuda College.“It’s just a really great time to be at the college and a great opportunity for Bermudians.”Dr Curtis-Tweed said that the college looked for Bermudians or permanent residents with a master’s degree or an equivalent certification.She added applicants would need to be prepared to teach online or face to face and have a passion for teaching and helping young people.Dr Curtis-Tweed said: “We’re looking for individuals that would be a great fit for the culture of the college, which is characterised by teaching excellence, dedication to student success and commitment to the college.“That means meeting with students during office hours to answer questions or concerns, that means really understanding the needs of students which may actually not always be totally academic needs.“Sometimes you have students who may have difficult home situations or learning issues, or other things that could impede their success if they’re not addressed.”Dr Curtis-Tweed added that the invitation to join the college was part of its Vision 2023 strategic plan to update college resources.The five-year plan, started in 2018, included improvements to academic programmes and better marketing and boosting college culture and student success.Dr Curtis-Tweed said that it was hoped to fill spaces left by retiring lecturers over the next seven years, but she added that the college was unsure how many would leave.She added: “We anticipate this to be just the beginning, so I can’t say that it’s only going to last for a year — I think that it has more to do with making sure that the college is filled.”The information session will be held on October 7 starting at 12.30pm and October 8 at 6.30pm.Lecturers who already work at the Paget college will share their experiences.• To register for the webinar, visit college.bm/teaching
