A group of nurses have won a total of $13,000 in scholarships to help them further their nursing education.

Olievia Martins and Luz Soto-Lambert, registered nurses, were given $2,000 each and Tamara Symons, Regina Dill and Theresa Santucci, all nursing students, were given $3,000 apiece.

The cash came from the Iris Davis Education Award, a scholarship fund created by the Bermuda Nurses Association and sponsored by the Chubb Charitable Foundation.

A spokeswoman for the BNA said: “We are truly grateful for the generous donation and collaboration with Chubb Charitable Foundation, which has made it possible to award five nursing scholarships this year.

“Nurses are the heart of healthcare and the Bermuda Nurses Association believes in the power of education and training to achieve high standards as a professional nurse.”

The scholarship is awarded to undergraduates and registered nurses for further education.

It is named after a trailblazing Black nurse who overcame segregation to become Bermuda’s first senior nurse.
