Information session on taking IB overseas through United World College

Unique opportunity: the UWC campus in Thailand (Photograph supplied)

Students planning to take the International Baccalaureate have the chance to broaden their horizons — by studying overseas.

Places are available at 18 United World College campuses around the world, including Thailand, Tanzania, Japan and India.

The UWC Bermuda national committee offers places at a combination of UWCs each year and undertakes selection. The application process is entirely merit-based with financial support provided as required.

Sean Smatt, the chairman of UWC Bermuda, said: “A UWC education is like nothing else available to Bermudian students.

“There are very good IB programmes in Bermuda. However, this opportunity is unique in that it is abroad, provides an amazing opportunity to explore the world and the cultures within it, and emphasises community service as a core element of education.

“Additionally, the UWC movement is partnered with a variety of scholarship programmes to help fund university education, specifically Davis scholarships to US universities which are available to UWC graduates.

“UWC inspires and challenges young people to put their talents and energy into social change, no matter which future path they choose. UWC selects promising, passionate students from all over the world and gives them the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a difference.

“UWC believes that education can inspire students to discover what connects us all as humans, and to act as champions for a world of peace, collaboration and understanding.”

Eligible students are encouraged to learn about the UWC movement and the application process at www.uwc.org and www.bm.uwc.org.

UWC Bermuda’s eligibility criteria are:

• Minimum age 16 at the time of the September 2023 intake (applications are generally received from students in Year 10/Grade 9/S2, S3)

• Five years of schooling in Bermuda

• Bermudian, or eligible for Bermudian status, at the age of 18

The Bermuda branch of UWC is hosting an information session tomorrow at 5.30pm at Waterville on Pomander Road in Paget. Zoom details and further information are at www.bm.uwc.org/about-uwc-bermuda/information-and-applications.
