Mount Saint Agnes Academy has congratulated its newest cohort of high school graduates after all 27 pupils earned their caps and gowns.

Altogether the students have also collected about $289,500 in scholarships to attend schools in North America, Bermuda and Britain.

Anna Faria-Machado, the school’s principal, congratulated the pupils during the rainiest graduation in the school’s recent memory.

She told the cohorts that their success was a reflection of the strength of the Alberta curriculum, a form of standardised testing from Canada that the school adopted in 2013.

Ms Machado said: “We are incredibly proud of these students as they begin the next phase of their education.

“Many of these students are graduating as members of the National Honour Society, demonstrating not only high academic achievement but also service, leadership and character.”

The Class of 2023 was the first class to sit the Alberta exams since 2020.

The curriculum is regarded as one of the best in the world and helps to gauge whether or not a student is meeting the standards of learning for Canada’s provinces.

The graduating class was also the first to participate in a financial management course, which saw them take part in unpaid internships to get valuable work experience and develop professional connections.

Of the 26 youngsters getting a higher education, 22 of them will continue their studies overseas.

Fifteen students will attend university in Canada, five will go to school in the US, two will live in the UK, and four will study in Bermuda.

One student will also Study Afloat, which involves learning while sailing through several countries around the world, while the remaining pupil will take a gap year.

Ian Da Silva, Class of 2023’s Valedictorian, said during his Class’s graduation: “Thanks to the foundation we have been given by teachers, friends, family and faith alike, we are now given the opportunity to begin our futures.”

Kyra King, the Salutatorian, told her graduating class that their 13 years of growth together had turned them into a family.

She added: “Our bond is not based on how long we’ve been together, it’s based on our ability to connect with each other, push past our differences and celebrate each other’s successes and the different experiences we’ve had.”
