Two outstanding graduates of the island’s senior schools have been awarded scholarships by the Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

The awards are named after Norma Jean Hendrickson and Geraldine Lambert, members of the Sigma Xi Omega chapter, and are given to students to further their education at Bermuda College.

Chemaj Rayner, a CedarBridge Academy graduate, was given the Dr Hendrickson award as she commences her studies for an Associate of Nursing degree in September.

Diamond Binns, who presented the scholarship, said: “Chemaj is an excellent candidate for this award as she exemplifies the true essence of striving to excel in her educational endeavours.

“Chemaj spends her spare time volunteering for St John Ambulance and is passionate about helping others.”

The Lambert scholarship went to Vanessa Daley, a graduate of The Berkeley Institute, who will attend the college to pursue an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree.

Necheeka Trott, the scholarship committee chairwoman who presented at the school’s prize-giving ceremony, said: “It’s truly inspiring to see Vanessa’s hard work and dedication paying off.

“This achievement not only represents her dedication to academics, but also highlights the immense potential and capabilities she demonstrates.”

Dr Hendrickson served at many levels of education, as a teacher, principal and an Assistant Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, while Ms Lambert was a lifelong educator who served with the Salvation Army.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is the first Black Greek sorority, founded in 1908 at Howard University, to encourage high scholastic and ethical standards and promote service to mankind.
