Sandys middle school closed over lack of staff
A lack of staff has forced the administration of a Sandys school to close its doors today after what was described by the Ministry of Education as a “teacher sick-out”.
In a message to parents and guardians — seen by The Royal Gazette — the administration of Sandys Secondary Middle School said it regretted that there were not enough staff to safely supervise pupils.
“However, we are here to receive any students that arrive,” the school said.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The Gazette contacted the school and was informed that pupils were sent home.
Last month, talks were held at the school after an “abrupt” closure following a shortage of staff.
Crystal Caesar, then the Acting Minister of Education, and Kalmar Richards, who was the ministry’s acting permanent secretary, met the school board to discuss the matter.
Today the ministry said it was working with the school’s board of governors to resolve “issues” that led to the sick-out.
“Efforts are being made to ensure a swift resolution to the matter and to restore normal teaching activities as quickly as possible.”
Ms Caesar said: “We appreciate the patience and understanding of parents and students during this time and commit to keeping all stakeholders informed as further developments occur.”
