An investigation has been launched after a “serious incident” involving the possession and distribution of a controlled substance took place at a Pembroke school.

Trina Cariah, the acting principal at Dellwood Middle School, sent a letter to parents yesterday afternoon saying that the Bermuda Police Service were assisting with the case.

She wrote: “I am writing to inform you of a serious incident that involved the possession and distribution of a controlled substance on our school grounds.

“The matter was addressed immediately in accordance with the school policy and in co-operation with the Bermuda Police Service.

“Given an investigation is under way, we are limited in what we can disclose; however, please be assured that the matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness.

“It is essential that we respond not only with disciplinary action but also with strong support and preventive education.”

Ms Cariah added: “We will continue with our education and preventive measures at school.

“We encourage you to speak with your child at home about the importance of making healthy, safe choices and to remind them that they can always speak to a trusted adult at school if they are feeling unsure, pressured or unsafe.

“If you have any questions or concerns, or would like support in talking with your child about this topic, please do not hesitate to contact our school office or counselling department.

“We are here to partner with you in ensuring the wellbeing and success of every student.”

Police did not respond to questions by press time and the Ministry of Education declined to comment.
