Four young Bermudians are undergoing comprehensive mechanical training courtesy of the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.

Dakada Gilbert, Darrien Gibbons, Wysdem Symonds and Trey Vance are learning skills in auto mechanics, heavy equipment repair and basic oxyacetylene welding.

The training programme is part of succession planning in the Public Service and follows internationally recognised Automotive Service Excellence standards.

The apprentices are rotating through the Government’s garages and honing their skills by working on a wide range of equipment, including lawnmowers, cars, vans, refuse trucks and heavy construction machinery.

Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said: “Dakada, Darrien, Wysdem and Trey are getting an excellent foundation by working at the government quarry as part of their learning and development.

“We are very excited about their progress. Their drive and eagerness to learn have already impressed their mentors, and we are excited about their future in the trade.”

Cherie Whitter, the Head of the Public Service, added: “The Public Service is working to recruit and train new talent to enhance and strengthen our talent pool.

“There are many options for individuals seeking fulfilling careers. With competitive salaries and benefits, the Public Service provides opportunities for growth and career advancement.

“By joining the team, young people will contribute to projects and initiatives that positively impact the community.”

A government spokeswoman said the hands-on training would prepare the men to maintain and repair a diverse fleet of equipment essential for the smooth operation of public services.

She said the guarantee that employees are well equipped to handle a variety of technical challenges would ensure the reliability and efficiency of public service operations.

The programme is administered jointly by the Ministry of Public Works and Environment and the Department of Workforce Development, with extra courses at the Bermuda College.
