Upcoming retreat to boost girls’ self-esteem

A day retreat aims to boost young women’s confidence and sense of community.

The HerStory Girls Club Day retreat, open to girls aged 11 to 15, will take place on May 24 at Sofia House on Church Street in Hamilton.

Dommonique DeSilva, youth co-ordinator at the Women’s Resource Centre and chief executive of Bermudian Queens Rock Academy, said the retreat will “offer a blend of self-esteem building, mindfulness, creativity and cultural exploration”.

She added: “We’ll include activities such as journalling, art, affirmations and empowering workshops, all aimed at fostering personal growth and confidence in a supportive environment.”

Ms DeSilva and Shera Hill of The Meditation Chic will lead the event, which is expected to run from 9am until 5pm and precede a new HerStory Girls Club.

Ms DeSilva said the free club will meet on the fourth Saturday of every month and include “journalling, TikTok challenges, movie discussions, creative art projects and leadership exercises to continue fostering empowerment, growth and a sense of community”.

She explained: “I know that empowering young women today requires passing down the wisdom and tools that I didn’t have access to when I was growing up in Brangman Home.

“Through HerStory Girls Club, we’re providing the next generation with the space to share their voices their stories and their light.”
