New BHS head of secondary announced
A passionate educator who is also a sports enthusiast has been appointed head of secondary at the Bermuda High School for Girls.
James Nightingale succeeds Catherine Hollingsworth and will assume his new role in August.
The school said Ms Hollingsworth, who is shifting her focus away from the secondary department, will serve exclusively in her role as deputy head of school.
Carol Swainson, the school’s head, said Ms Hollingsworth had been a “tremendous leader” and serving the school as deputy head would give the institution the ability to work “even more strategically as a whole school”.
Mr Nightingale joined BHS in 2017, when he was appointed head of humanities in the secondary department.
He said the school’s community holds a special place in his heart.
He added: “BHS has a longstanding tradition of excellence, and I am eager to continue working alongside our talented staff and incredible students to build on that legacy.
“My goal is to inspire, support and challenge our students to reach their full potential, ensuring they leave BHS with strong academic foundations and the confidence and skills to thrive in the wider world.”
Ms Swainson added: “We are thrilled to welcome Mr Nightingale to this role and look forward to what his leadership will bring to our community.”
Over the years, Mr Nightingale has overseen a diverse range of subjects, including geography, history, business studies, economics and global politics.
He has guided both middle and senior school students through the International General Certificate of Secondary Education programme, the International Baccalaureate programme and the A-level curriculum.
He also contributed to the enhancement of the school’s humanities department, providing students with experiential learning opportunities, including overseas study trips to destinations such as Iceland, Germany and New York.
Mr Nightingale actively supports student engagement in extracurricular activities and he also believes in preparing young people for success as the world evolves.
Ms Hollingsworth noted: “As an existing member of staff, Mr Nightingale is already respected by parents, colleagues and students.
“He sees the importance of an educational environment that fosters the development of personal and academic growth.
“And he has already shown his dedication to ensuring our students have a rich understanding of the world around them.
“I am excited to be working with Mr Nightingale to continue to grow and strengthen BHS as it moves forward.”
