Emotional journey to school’s origins ahead of closure
More than 100 pupils and staff members at Prospect Primary School walked en mass to celebrate the institution’s 67-year history ahead of its closure in June.
The walk on Friday morning started at the police barracks, the original site of the school, to its present location on Old Military Road, and also formed part of Prospect Primary’s longstanding Leaders and Legacy Day celebrations.
Tamberlé Bean, the social studies team leader and P1 teacher, who has taught at the school for 29 years, said it was an emotional occasion.
She said: “This final walk was to commemorate the beginning of Prospect and the end of Prospect.
“It was emotional for us with the school closing, the children enjoyed it and enjoyed the significance of it. I thought it was important that people recognise it.
“What I love about Prospect is the children and the community aspect we try to encourage.
“We try to get families out at all kinds of events and get the community involved.”
Ms Bean added: “I have awesome memories here of the teachers, staff and students — it has been like a family.
“I had children I taught who are sending their children here now, I’m seeing the generations come and go. This month has been very emotional.
“I sit here and it’s bringing it all back again. It is amazing.”
Holly Richardson, the school’s principal, wrote a play about Prospect for the children to perform.
Dr Richardson said: “I wanted to ensure that the children not only have a memorable experience but that part of the history and legacy of their school is ingrained in them as they have been through this dramatic experience.
“It is an emotional time for everybody but we have focused on it being a year of celebration — we have done many things to uplift everyone and it has been a very positive experience.”
Prospect Primary is scheduled to close on June 20, a week before the rest of the public schools, to allow time for equipment and supplies to be packed away.
Gilbert Institute is also scheduled to close this month as part of the Government’s education reform plans.
