Prospect Primary celebrated its final graduating class with parents and students at a leaving ceremony yesterday.

Holly Richardson, the school’s principal, said the theme for the ceremony was “Roots and Wings”, and the goal had been to build a foundation for the students to succeed in their futures.

“For all of our students, these primary school years have been part of their root development,” Dr Richardson said.

“The lessons in our classrooms and on our school field have not only been centred around mathematical and literacy concepts.

“Those lessons have been aimed at stabilising the boys and girls, a quest to help them to shape their positive character traits and develop a sense of worth and value, for themselves and for others.”

She added: “With those established roots, we expect the P6 class of 2025 to use their wings to fly.”

The 12 graduating students told attendees about their aspirations to play professional sports or become lawyers or accountants.

Dr Richardson also thanked the families of the students, urging them not to grow weary as their children grow older.

“Your children continue to need your love, support and encouragement as they move through their teen years,” she said.

Prospect Primary School was formed in 1958 through the amalgamation of Pembroke Infants School and the Central School, now known as the Victor Scott School.

It was housed in barracks recently vacated by the retiring British garrison. The school was one of the largest on the island and enrolled 704 students in its first week. It remained at that site for 15 years.

The school moved to its Friendship Lane location in 1973, where it has been ever since.

In April 2023, the Government announced that both Prospect Primary School and the Gilbert Institute would close their doors this month as part of a move to create parish primary schools.

Last year Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education at the time, said the decision to close the schools was based on several factors, including capacity at other schools in the area to take in the students.

“For the Prospect Primary School building, addressing the infrastructure issues to redevelop the site into a signature school for exceptionalities is more practical with the school being empty,” Mr Rabain added.
