The founder of a centre that introduces young people to water-based disciplines, conservation and marine science is looking to the future as the organisation marks a new chapter in its development.

JP Skinner, the founder of Waterstart who plans to step back to allow the next generation to take over, spoke at a ceremony at its newly renovated headquarters on Burt Island.

Guests gathered in front of the restored building to witness the traditional wetting of the roof and the ringing of the old bell, a relic of Burt Island’s rich history.

Mr Skinner told the gathering: “The ringing of the bell is a both call to arms and a changing of the guard.”

He added: “Waterstart’s Burt Island campus offers meaningful learning experiences for students to connect with their environment.”

The event marked a milestone in efforts by Waterstart to restore its home and expand access to environmental education for young Bermudians.

The celebration brought together alumni, staff, donors, community members, government representatives and key partners.

The upgraded facility is the first phase of a multiphase restoration to improve the charity's outreach and protection of the island.

Stephen Meireles of SM Construction, who oversaw the renovation and is himself a Waterstart alumnus, climbed onto the roof to toast the building with Bermuda rum, while Mr Skinner welcomed alumni to speak of their experiences.

Kwe’shon Woods-Hollis, who recently took up the position of marine systems manager at Waterstart, credited the programme for kick-starting his career in the marine industry;

He said: “My love for the ocean started at Waterstart and I now love helping students move from fear of the ocean to courage.”

JD Symonds, boatswain mate for the Bermuda Royal Regiment Coastguard and a newly appointed Waterstart board member, described his experiences at Waterstart as a teenager.

He said: “I developed a serious respect for the water and the environment, both above and below the water.”

Phoebe Barboza-Bellamy, Waterstart’s programme director, spoke of her educational journey and how Waterstart gave her a renewed sense of purpose.

She said: “After working in coral reef resilience labs, I knew I wanted to help ignite a passion for the ocean in the next generation. Waterstart has been the perfect place to do just that.”

Sudell Joseph and Regina Ferguson of the Ministry of Public Works and Environment, closed out the ceremony by ringing the bell to cheers from the crowd.

Mr Skinner said the charity was “honoured” to have them attend.

He added: “Waterstart is extremely fortunate to be partnering with the ministry and to have Ms Joseph and Ms Ferguson as landlords of the Burt Island campus.

“The 20-year lease afforded to Waterstart and the shared mission to support local education will have a tremendous positive impact on young people in Bermuda for decades to come. We are immensely grateful.”

Jose Osset, chairman of Waterstart’s board of directors, thanked donors who made the renovations possible.

He said: “We extend our heartfelt thanks to our many dedicated partners.

“Their belief in Waterstart’s mission and commitment to its future have been instrumental in bringing this project to life and have made a tremendous impact on local families. Thank you all.”

Throughout the day, guests explored the new space and toured the island with Waterstart alumni and staff, taking in sights including the newly planted permaculture garden and nature trails.

According to a statement, Waterstart’s programmes are rooted in a philosophy that the natural world can stand as a powerful teacher.

By fostering deep connections with the marine environment and encouraging personal growth through diving, Waterstart nurtures the next generation of environmental leaders.
