Maritime Career Springboard Programme a success
Eight young Bermudians boosted their seafaring and employability skills through Endeavour’s Maritime Career Springboard Programme this year.
A spokeswoman from the charity, which runs the programme with the Bermuda College Athora Division of Professional and Career Education, said five men and three women completed training from January 6 to February 21.
Springboard graduates, aged between 16 and 23, were presented with certificates at the National Museum of Bermuda on September 25.
The spokeswoman said: “A core objective of the Springboard Programme is to provide exposure to maritime careers by connecting Bermudian youth with industry professionals, enabling them to build their network while gaining real-world insight into the wide range of career opportunities, as well as the education and qualifications required to pursue them.
“All members of the 2025 cohort reported increased awareness of maritime career opportunities and expressed feeling better prepared for employment in the maritime industry upon completing the programme.”
Jennifer Pitcher, Endeavour executive director, said: “Each Springboard graduate has shown tremendous dedication and we are proud and inspired by all they have accomplished.”
Graduate Siyon Paynter, 19, explained: “Beyond the certifications, I gained leadership skills, a sense of responsibility and a love for teaching.
“Now, as a programme instructor intern with Endeavour, I’ve developed a deeper respect for the ocean and my role as a mentor.
“Each day on the water reinforces safety, teamwork and confidence skills that apply far beyond sailing.”
Aidan DeFrias, another 19-year-old graduate, said: “My understanding of the maritime industry has grown as I discovered many opportunities I wasn’t aware of before the programme.
“Work shadowing with the Bermuda Coastguard and Waterstart were unforgettable experiences that shaped my future career plans.”
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, told graduates of the 2025 Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme: “You have earned internationally recognised certifications, strengthened your employability skills and gained the confidence and practical experience needed to thrive in Bermuda's maritime industry and beyond.
“I commend your commitment and determination and encourage you to carry forward the skills you have gained as you embark on the next chapter of your journey.”
A government spokeswoman added: “The 2025 graduates are now well prepared for employment opportunities in Bermuda's maritime industry, which includes superyachts, watersports, shipping, logistics and marine & ports services.
“Their internationally recognised qualifications also open doors to more than 2,500 training schools worldwide, from the Mediterranean and Caribbean to Asia and the Middle East.”
Karen Smith, programme co-ordinator for Bermuda College APACE, said: “Bermuda College remains steadfast in its commitment to responding to Bermuda’s evolving workforce needs.
“By leveraging strong community partnerships and shared resources, we continue to prepare individuals to meaningfully contribute to the island’s economic and social development.”
An information session about the programme will take place at the Bermuda College at 6pm on October 21. Those interested should RSVP via education@endeavour.bm by October 20.
Bermudians aged 16 and older who wish to participate in the upcoming Springboard Programme, set to run from January 12 to February 27, 2026, should e-mail a resume and cover letter expressing their interest to education@endeavour.bm by 5pm on November 1.
