Young people were schooled up on prioritising their wellbeing while safely navigating the online world at a conference of hundreds.

A spokeswoman said the third annual Big Up Yaself national youth conference, organised by the Office of Youth Affairs, was held on January 29 and 30 and centred on the theme “Protecting your peace: Online safety and digital wellness”.

She explained that 213 students from primary school and middle schools and 53 high-school pupils took part in the conference, which aligns with the National Youth Policy’s goals of protecting young people, helping them achieve their educational potential, minimising antisocial behaviour and participating in civic engagement.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said: “Big Up Yaself continues to be a powerful platform for reaching our young people where they are and addressing the real challenges they face online and offline.”

Family Centre, filmmaker Dion the Creative, Solstice and others led interactive workshops and Litt-Really Fun Entertainment provided additional activities.

The spokeswoman concluded: “Several young people expressed enthusiasm about attending the conference again next year, reinforcing the continued importance of safe spaces where youth can learn, share and grow.”
