Road safety campaign gets creative treatment at college

Media arts students at the Bermuda College have drawn up campaigns for road safety championing designated drivers.

A college spokesman said the students were challenged to present original campaign concepts to tackle the crisis through an initiative titled “The One” — positioning the drivers as heroes.

Collaborating in small groups, students proposed their versions of The One, detailing a media campaign supported by a proposed 60-second public service announcement.

The groups used research with pre-production, production and post-production techniques. Rather than producing the final video, they were assessed on their ability to communicate the concept, strategy and intended public impact within a tight presentation window.

Proposals went before a panel of industry professionals and guests including Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, and Patrice Fisher, an American actress.

Dana Selassie, who designed the programme, said it asked students “not only to be creative, but to be conscious”.

She added: “I am intentional about challenging my students to work on projects that go beyond course requirements and make a meaningful contribution to Bermuda.

“Road fatalities are not theoretical; they are real — and this is a national crisis that affects families across our island.”

A concept developed by students Zuri Durham and Kejah Weeks was selected as the campaign for the class to develop over the course.

Lamone Woods, of Channel 82, offered practical guidance, and participants were invited to attend an acting and performance workshop hosted by Sia Spence, with Ms Fisher covering storytelling and performance techniques relevant to public service campaigns.

Necheeka Trott, the school’s assistant to the president for strategic and special projects, said it reflected the college’s commitment to “an education that extends beyond the classroom, connecting academic learning with real-world challenges facing the island”.
