Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, commended the work of students at Somersfield Academy after attending the school’s Personal Project Exhibition this month.

A spokeswoman said Mr Murdoch called the projects in the showcase — each of which was the culmination of a yearlong independent inquiry by Somersfield M5 pupils — “inspirational” in a social media post.

He also praised Julie Yoon, the M5 personal project co-ordinator, for another successful exhibition.

Mr Murdoch and Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, met M5 students and delivered closing remarks during the exhibition, which ran on February 5 and 6.

Several Cabinet ministers and MPs, including Jaché Adams, Kim Wilkerson, Tinée Furbert and Owen Darrell, also attended the exhibition.

The spokeswoman said: “Their presence and thoughtful feedback offered students valuable real-world perspectives and professional insight.”

She added: “The exhibition challenges students to demonstrate higher-order thinking, creativity and authentic application of knowledge.”

Projects this year included a custom-made surfboard, remote-controlled vehicles and hypoallergenic dog biscuits.

The spokeswoman explained: “For the first time, Somersfield Academy extended invitations to other schools to attend the exhibition.

“Students and staff from Dellwood Middle School and Chatmore British International School joined the event, engaging thoughtfully with presenters and asking insightful questions.

“The atmosphere reflected genuine intellectual exchange and peer-to-peer connection.

“Strengthening collaboration among Bermuda’s schools is essential to building a vibrant educational community and reflects Somersfield Academy’s vision, mission and values.”

She added that inclement weather caused a temporary power outage during the exhibition, but students remained composed and continued presenting throughout.

The spokeswoman thanked all the visiting guests and schools and commended M5 students’ “dedication, perseverance and the intellectual maturity demonstrated throughout this significant milestone.”
