Hard work spelt success for students from 19 schools at the Annual Verbal Victory Bermuda Spelling Bee, held at CedarBridge Academy.

After a series of heated play-off competitions, Hunter Pewter, from Somersfield Academy, took home the top prize, followed by Eli Oduntan, from Saltus Grammar School, George Morris, from Dellwood Middle School, and Eabha O’Hanlon, from Warwick Academy.

Preparation for the contest began in September when schools were presented with a lengthy list of “easy, intermediate and difficult” words for the students to study.

The semi-finals were held on February 1, with the top 13 students going head-to-head at the finals on March 8.

During early rounds of the finals, students were required to spell words from the easy and intermediate categories before progressing to more difficult words and, eventually, unseen words not included in the provided lists.

Retired Puisne Judge Norma Wade Miller, chairwoman of the Bermuda Spelling Bee Board of Trustees, said: “Once again, we were impressed by the calibre of participants.

“It is exciting to see how thoughtful and engaged the students are and how hard they have worked to take part in the contest. It’s always tough to watch the youngsters being knocked out, but that is also a life lesson.

“The schools and the parents do a wonderful job with their young people, providing tremendous support for the students. It’s all very encouraging.”

Robert Horton, deputy chair, added: “Our 13 young spellers are the heroes of the hour. We are indeed excited to witness their dedication, hard work and talent as they showcase their skills in this prestigious event.”
