Springboard to work at sea celebrates latest graduates
The Endeavour sailing programme for maritime training and job skills has partnered with the Bermuda College Athora Division of Professional and Career Education.
The charity’s Springboard Programme offers Bermudians aged 16 and older with hands-on experience, skills development and industry exposure.
Since 2018, 92 young Bermudians have completed the programme, with more than 70 per cent now employed or continuing education — many in the maritime sector.
From January 12 to February 27, nine Bermudians aged 16 to 25 — three females and six males — successfully completed the seven-week programme.
The group included three high school students as well as college attendees and graduates: one from CedarBridge Academy who is dual enrolled at the Bermuda College, along with a pupil of The Berkeley Institute and a GED student from the Adult Education School.
Five got their introduction to sailing in Endeavour’s five-day science, technology, engineering, arts and maths education through sailing programme, open to all students in Bermuda aged 11 and 12.
Three from the group completed Endeavour’s graduate programme, while two went through its assistant instructor programme and volunteered with younger students.
Derek Ingram Jr, 18, was the first graduate of Endeavour’s No Limits Sailing Programme to progress into the Springboard Programme after nine years of studies.
The teenager said he explored a variety of marine businesses and how they worked together, from sailing and boat handling to safety procedures and maintenance — highlighting learning about the Department of Marine and Ports Services and its ferry operations.
Noah Astwood, 18, said that the programme built his confidence, sailing and teaching skills, and revealed many careers in Bermuda’s maritime industry.
Roger Dill, 25, said: “I especially valued the career days and certifications, which will support my future path.”
The programme this year was delivered entirely by alumni.
Jah-Shon Smith, the Endeavour East chief instructor, praised the graduates’ “extraordinary dedication”.
Endeavour thanked a host of marine partners and industry professionals for providing mentorship, expertise and support
In the programme’s final week, five participants earned their Royal Yachting Association dinghy instructor qualification, while another five got hands-on experience through job shadowing.
Karen Smith, a programme co-ordinator for Bermuda College’s Apace, said the programme helped bridge the gap between education and industry.
Endeavour will host the tenth springboard cohort from January 11 to February 26 of 2027. Eligible candidates must be Bermudians aged 16 and above.
Applications will be accepted until November 4 via e-mail at education@endeavour.bm. For more information, visit Endeavour.bm.
