Imaginative plans for a corporate library combining beehive imagery with the flowing curves of an arc carried a Bermudian interior design student to the top of a competition in her chosen field.

Naomi Every is finishing her second year of the Honours Bachelor of Interior Design programme in Sheridan College, Canada.

She called on her creative side to take on the challenge for the 2026 Staples Design Competition — by splitting the word “archive”.

“I had the concept of ‘arc’ and ‘hive’,” Ms Every, from Devonshire, said of the design, which took inspiration from “natural materials to create a soft space”.

“It’s about bringing nature to Toronto. When I spoke to the judges, they really liked that aspect. In the city, sometimes you just want a break,” she added.

Her challenge was to think outside the box for a workplace design. Ms Every said: “I didn’t do it to win — I wanted to learn. I love advancing my design skills. It took two to three months to bring to fruition.”

Her floor-to-ceiling design had to transform the offices of a marketing agency in the Toronto-Dominion Centre that came with a fictional back story designed for the challenge, covering everything from lighting to furniture.

She had to learn how to use entirely new design software for the project.

Ms Every was one of six finalists. Her pitch to the judges included a PowerPoint presentation in front of industry professionals. She was selected as one of the two winners.

Her fascination with the field started when she was a child.

She said: “I started school at 3 at Somersfield Academy. I always loved art — as I continued schooling, I liked the combination of art and design.

“When I had to decide what I wanted to do for college, I really wanted to be challenged. Design was going to challenge me more.

“With interior design, I could implement my creativity.

“In my first year of college, I really enjoyed it; I wanted to be in class as much as possible. That was what I loved.”

Ms Every said she would probably rack up more experience in her field in Canada but called returning to Bermuda “my end goal”.

She added: “I want to bring back as much knowledge as I can.”
