The public will have to wait to learn about results from international assessments which last year saw the island’s public school studentss lag behind their counterparts from around the world.

The Ministry of Education has received results from the Cambridge International Education, Cambridge Checkpoint and International General Certificate of Secondary Education assessments and is analysing them before sharing them with schools and parents.

This announcement came after it was revealed that Bermuda’s public school students last year scored lower than international averages in almost all areas.

The revelation led the ministry to request that CIE review all results of the Cambridge Checkpoint, taken by middle school pupils, and IGCSE, taken by senior students, between 2012 and 2025.

That review showed there had been a gradual decline in overall results between 2023 and 2025 and a widening gap between the best and worst performing students.

The spokeswoman said this week that the 2026 results will first be shared with principals, who will then discuss the findings with teachers to ensure they “understand the results and are able to consider the information within the context of student learning, instructional practice and areas for continued improvement”.

She explained: “Following this internal review, parents and guardians will receive the individual results for their children through their respective schools.

“This sequencing ensures that families have the opportunity to receive information about their child’s performance directly from their school and, where necessary, discuss the results with the appropriate educators.”

The 2026 Cambridge assessment results will then be published on the ministry website once this engagement is complete. The Royal Gazette sent a further query about precisely when this publication could be.

Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, said this week the ministry hopes to improve outcomes for every student in Bermuda’s public schools.

He explained: “Cambridge assessments provide us with important information that must be carefully reviewed and understood within the appropriate context.

“The value of these results is not simply in reporting numbers, but in how we use the information to identify areas of strength, address gaps in learning and strengthen teaching and learning across our schools.”

The spokeswoman added that the Cambridge assessments aim to “provide insight into students’ strengths and areas requiring further development”.

She said: “The information assists educators in identifying learning needs, informing instructional strategies and planning appropriate interventions and supports.

“The Ministry and Department of Education remain committed to ensuring that student performance data is used purposefully to support continuous improvement across the Bermuda Public School System.”
