A saxophonist wearing Bermuda shorts and decorated with Bermuda flags represented his country on a television show in the US this week.

Gianluca Gibbons appeared on Let’s Make A Deal, in which contestants compete for money and prizes by striking deals.

The Bermudian entertainer, who lives in Hollywood, explained: “It’s a variety game show and essentially you go on and you start by answering some questions.

“As you answer questions you start winning money, then the more money you win, the more deals and trades they offer you.”

Mr Gibbons has a friend who is a casting producer and suggested that he applied to go on the show, which is filmed in Los Angeles and airs on CBS.

He said: “Everyone is supposed to dress in some sort of costume. It could be anything — it could be cultural, it could be satire, it could be a TV show.

“I didn’t want it to be gimmicky so I was brainstorming to see, what’s the best way to go on the show?

“Most people don’t really know much about Bermuda, let alone if I say I’m Bermudian they’re like ‘wow, you’re the first Bermudian I’ve ever met’.

“I figured it was a great opportunity to go as Bermudian as I possibly could go.”

Mr Gibbons added: “I initially just dressed up in the traditional Bermuda businessman’s suit with the flag and the producers asked me — they liked the outfit, but can I include more flags?”

In a clip from the programme, which was broadcast on Tuesday, Mr Gibbons came on to the stage and waved a Bermuda flag with additional flags stuck to his jacket.

Host Wayne Brady asked if the emblem was for New Zealand before he was corrected by the contestant.

Mr Gibbons told him: “Born in Bermuda, from Bermuda, raised in Bermuda.”

He was invited to play the saxophone — an instrument he has played since the age of 8.

Mr Gibbons said: “Because it was on television I wasn’t able to play any specific known music. He just asked me to improvise, that way there wouldn’t be any licensing issues.

“They just played some music and I just improvised over it.”

Mr Brady dubbed the piece “Triangle Funk”.

“I felt like he just created a new genre,” Mr Gibbons said.

Mr Gibbons, who is a financial consultant with New York Life and NYLIFE Securities, said that his professional background was not enough for him to win top prizes on the game show.

He explained: “The show is purely speculative.

“The only strategy is how high is your risk tolerance, and apparently mine’s very high … I took on the most risk possible.”

Mr Gibbons said: “Unfortunately I didn’t win much.

“I went on the show, I answered all the questions right and I won $3,500.

“Then he said I can keep the money or I could make a 50-50 deal. One means I walk away with nothing and the other means I walk away with a brand-new car worth $22,000.

“I waged 50-50 and I got the 50 per cent that didn’t include the car.

“But they gave me $200 for playing the saxophone.”

He added: “I really went on just to have a good time. If I got a bonus out of it I was going to be ready for it.

“A new car would have been nice … but, you know, God had another plan.”

Mr Gibbons, who has performed around the world, said that the clip has attracted about 200 comments on his Instagram account.

He explained: “People reached out to me for multiple performing opportunities and collaboration opportunities, so I guess they saw the video.

“I got asked to play at a movie premiere.”

Mr Gibbons added: “Very positive response and a lot of love from Bermuda, which has been exciting."

He and a partner — known as Trendy Chef — are themselves working on the development of two television shows focused on food and music.

Mr Gibbons said: “We will be pitching to major networks and streaming platforms in the upcoming months.”
