A cinema on Union Street is closed for renovations, the Bermuda Industrial Union confirmed.

Chris Furbert, president of the union, which owns and manages Liberty Theatre, said the cinema is scheduled to reopen sometime next summer.

He explained: “[The theatre] will have around 100 less seats, down to around 150, but the seats will be larger. I think the public will be impressed with the renovations.”

He did not comment further on the project. The building where the 270-seat theatre and the BIU headquarters are housed was named after former union president Ottiwell Simmons in 2019.

Mr Simmons, who was on the committee that helped build the theatre, passed away in June at the age of 89.
