Sculptors taking part in the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition were able to finish their masterpieces in the nick of time before a heavy downpour caused a temporary disruption to the event.

Competitors frantically positioned gazebos over their newly completed sand sculptures as rain and winds pounded Horseshoe Bay at 4pm — just as judging was due to begin.

The event had already been pushed back a week owing to inclement weather.

Hannah Emmerson, organiser of the competition, said: “What a perfect and glorious day to build castles and sculptures on the beach... until 4pm. Tools down and cue double showers of heavy rain.

“Judging happened despite the weather, and the sun came out again in time for prize-giving, supplying rainbows and big smiles for all the winners.

“Some 27 teams competed this year, and while there were lower numbers than hoped due to the storms, and change in date, all of the teams bought their A game and created some absolutely stunning pieces.”

The winner of the Adult category was Pete Faverio, who flew to the island from Delaware to enter the competition.

This year’s Adult category was the largest, with nine teams competing.

The Best on the Beach prize was awarded to Team Big Diggers, made up of Jonathan Nappee, Renaud Oury and Kian Wookey, who created a “perfectly executed hermit crab”.

Team Optimistic Walletts were the winners of an Honourable Mention for their “stunning piece” depicting a Bermuda moon gate framing a heart.

Ms Emmerson added: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the sponsors, judges, my amazing volunteers and all the hard-working creative teams who came out to make these amazing sculptures.”
