Recipe for success: Dylan’s new book hits the bestseller list
A Bermudian social-media star turned cookbook author has returned to the bestseller list with a culinary tour of the United States.
Baking Across America, Dylan Hollis’s follow-up to last year’s bestseller Baking Yesteryear, hit No 2 on The New York Times bestseller list this month.
Mr Hollis, who has embarked on a book tour across the US, said that the response to the new book had been fantastic.
“I presented myself with a hard act to follow with Baking Yesteryear,” he said. “That was such an overnight success — we hit number one on The New York Times bestseller list.
“It was fitting that book number two got to No 2. We stayed on for another week and we are hoping that it will get back up as we continue to travel across the US on this book tour.
“I have been on the road since May 17 and to be able to talk to people in all these different states has been incredible.”
Mr Hollis gained international fame for an ongoing series of baking videos he started while studying at the University of Wyoming.
In the series, Mr Hollis comedically tests out recipes from old cookbooks ranging from surprising favourites such as peanut butter bread to dietary train wrecks such as the Yum Yum Salad.
The responses to his video series helped to inspire the direction of Baking Across America, in which he tackles iconic dishes from regions across America.
“A lot of responses were kind of the same, in that people would say, my mom would make that or my grandmother would make that,” he said. “Or if it was bad, it was ‘I would rather not remember my mom or my grandmother made that’.
“Then I would hit on a recipe that was regional. I did a gooey butter cake from St Louis, Missouri, and I noticed that the responses were very different.
“People were prepared to go to war over these things. It was like talking about a sports team, almost.
“I thought it was interesting that there was such a patriotic following for a dessert.”
Last summer, he set out on a tour of the US, visiting 18 states and the District of Columbia, trying a variety of regional delicacies such as the Boston Cream Pie, New Orlean’s iconic beignets and Michigan’s cherry winks.
“Yes, you can just look up the recipes and write a book but we spent the entire summer last year travelling and preparing this cookbook on the ground,” he said.
While Baking Yesteryear featured a chapter of historical culinary failures — something he has highlighted in his TikTok videos — Baking Across America focuses fully on recipes readers will want to eat, while retaining his humorous perspective.
He said that while those familiar with his content may have appreciated the addition of the more unusual recipes, those who found his book in the store without that familiarity may not have had the same reaction.
Mr Hollis is busy touring the US to promote the new book but has already begun thinking about what the follow-up could be.
“The direction I have been thinking about is the seasons as they change and the events and festivities and celebrations across the US,” he said.
“Maybe we go to the UK; we go to Bermuda. I really want to do a book that incorporates more Bermuda — so we are thinking about baking across the seasons or baking across the year, but right now my focus is on Baking Across America.”
Mr Hollis intends to continue his popular TikTok videos, which he has recorded regularly for almost five years.
He said: “There is going to be a plateau but I’m still doing this as long as it works, ride the wave as long as it crests.”
Baking Across America is available in local bookstores.
