A Bermudian musician has taken a significant step in her career with the release of her first single to a global audience.

No Label, an original song by Hana Bushara, will be released today with an accompanying music video featuring other Bermudian talent.

The 26-year-old musician said the release coincided with her leaving her job in reinsurance to pursue her dream full-time.

Ms Bushara said: “I feel like the progression of my musical journey has been so non-linear.”

She added: “Everyone has been very supportive.

“I always say that there’s never an end goal to life — you just have to find what makes you feel like you’re getting close to that end goal.

“Playing and performing music is the closest I’ve ever gotten to feeling like I’ve reached that end goal.”

Ms Bushara said that No Label explored the uncertain nature of a friendship becoming more romantic and how trying to define the relationship can affect it.

She explained: “It oscillates between defining it for the sake of it becoming more legible and not defining it just so it can exist.”

Ms Bushara said she drew inspiration from Bermudian artist Seth De Roulet, particularly with his Bending Light exhibition at the Bermuda National Gallery.

She explained that the exhibit played with the concept of light and shadows in bodies of water, which she said reminded her of the fluid nature of relationships.

The performer has created a song reflecting Mr Roulet’s work to participate in the gallery’s Re-Interpreting Light event accompanying the exhibition.

Ms Bushara added that she later went on to refine the song with the help of Bermudian producer Callum Smith, also known as BermudaCal, who added a saxophone melody to Ms Bushara’s acoustic guitar and vocals.

The musician described No Label as an “evocative music experience” that used plenty of metaphors connected to the ocean.

She said that the water imagery was “a perfect parallel to describe the vastness that exists in the undefined”.

Ms Bushara added that the song asked the question: “Does everything have to be named and does it change when it is named?”

The music video to No Label was directed by Dominic O’Donnell, a videographer known as Domamanic, and features Bermudian dancer Honor Minors.

Ms Bushara started making music when she was 15. Her themes often touched on growth and personal experiences.

She has performed at the Bermuda Festival three times. She started in 2019, played as an opening act for Nobuntu alongside Derek G in 2020 and played again in 2022 with the Westerlies.

She was an opening act for Bermudian singer Heather Nova on her Antwerp and London tours.

She also performed regularly at the former cocktail bar The Birdcage, as well as the Moongate Brewery in St George’s.

She was awarded Best Vocalist in 2023 in The Bermudian Magazine’s Best of Bermuda Awards.

The following year, Ms Bushara won the Bermuda Arts Council Grant.

She has performed at the annual Premier and Heroes Day concerts, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, the Newport Bermuda Race and SailGP.

She has also brought her music to corporate events and weddings.

No Label will be available on all music sharing platforms today.
