Spook-tacular surprises planned in Olde Towne
The Town of St George will come to life with a series of new events between October 31 and November 2.
The fun begins with a special Hallowe’en trick-or-treat event on Water Street organised by artist and entrepreneur Tara Sapien.
Ms Sapien, a lifelong town resident, said: “I’ve long thought that St George should be the place for Hallowe’en, and I know I was not the only one.
“For years we discussed it and just hadn’t been able to follow through on it. Finally, I felt that this was the year, so I organised the Olde Towne Trick & Treat as a way to create a safe space for kids to be in and enjoy the holiday.
“I wanted us to come together as a town, create this offering and build our events in St George generally.
“Recently, we’ve been able to come together more and more on things, and each offer our own little part.”
Water Street will be closed during the event, which will also feature allergy-free treats, ghost stories, a scavenger hunt and a fire performance by Cirqle Circus Arts Collective, a business created by Ms Sapien.
She said: “We will also have a ghost hunt. There will be miniature ghosts hidden all throughout the town, and whoever manages to bring them back to Frequency Café & Hub, one of our main sponsors, will win a prize.”
The event will run from 4pm to 8.30pm. The first hour will be reserved for younger children and those with special needs.
Standard trick-or-treat tickets are $18 for children and free for accompanying adults. Priority tickets, which include premium viewing for the fire show and access to Hallowe’en activities, are $30 for children and $40 for adults.
Early-bird tickets are $15 for the regular trick-or-treat event, $25 for child priority and $35 for adult priority. Participation in the scavenger hunt is $8 extra.
The fun continues on Saturday with a screening of Coco at St Peter’s Church and a cake-decorating workshop for ages 4 and up at Frequency Café.
Ms Sapien said: “The workshop will be our first in our kids’ series where we empower kids to get creative and artistic with their food.
“We will be having more themed cupcake decorating where they’ll learn a little bit about the basics of decorating and get to have fun.”
Tickets for this workshop, which will run from 3pm to 5pm, are $55 each.
A self-guided dessert-decorating event will take place at the café, while a crown-crafting workshop and skull make-up tutorial will be held outside the business on November 2 to mark the Day of the Dead.
The Day of the Dead is celebrated annually in Mexico from October 31 to November 2, when it is believed that the souls of the deceased can briefly rejoin their living relatives.
Tickets for the decorating are $25 and participation in the crown and make-up workshops cost $55 each.
Organisers thanked the Corporation of St George, Frequency Café, Dragon’s Lair Gallery and several others for sponsoring the events, which Ms Sapien hopes to build on in future.
She added: “I’m really excited to see St George invest in Hallowe’en. We always talk about how Salem started as a very small event. Now, it’s one of the biggest, if not the biggest, on the East Coast or in America for Hallowe’en, and the fall season generally.”
Tickets for all the events are available at Ptix.bm.
