A feature-length psychological horror film with multiple links to Bermuda has been released on global video-on-demand platforms.

Samuel Clemens, the writer and director of The Drowned which premiered this month, is a descendant of the iconic writer of the same name whose pen name was Mark Twain.

Twain famously treasured Bermuda, likening it to Heaven.

Mr Clemens’s younger brother, George, is also editor on the film.

Agam Jain, a former Bermuda resident and an actuary, is lead producer for the picture with his team at Take The Shot Films, a British-based company he cofounded, and has acquired funding from his Bermuda connections in the business world.

Additionally, some of the underwater shots were filmed in Bermuda waters by Mr Jain.

The film has been released on platforms such as Amazon Prime and Google Play, and is also available for pre-order on Apple TV.

Mr Jain told The Royal Gazette: “All of us who have lived in Bermuda know about Mark Twain's love for the island.

“His descendants’ full names are Samuel Joshua Twain Clemens and George Barnaby Langhorne Clemens, clearly a nod to their great-great-great-uncle, Mr Twain.

“They are also sons of the prolific British film and TV writer the late Brian Clemens OBE, who was the creative force behind famous British shows such as The Avengers and The Professionals, and films like The Golden Voyage of Sinbad,Captain Kronos and Highlander 2.

“So writing and creativity is kind of in their blood, to say the least.

“Two of the film's investors — Manish Thareja and Akhil Kapur — are both associate producers on the project and residents on the island, so it would have been difficult to make this film without their trust and support.”

The Drowned tells the story of three men and a woman involved in an art heist of an infamous painting, and travel separately to an isolated refuge near the sea.

However, the woman, who was the first expected to arrive, is not found at the house and one of the men finds the painting lying on the beach next to a pool of blood.

When he decides not to tell the others, a web of lies begins to emerge.

The plot moves to an otherworldly realm, as “a strange, whispering sound sends its listeners into a trance-like state” and others are mysteriously drowned.

The Drowned received a three-star review from The Guardian newspaper in Britain, which Mr Jain said is “rare for an indie horror”.

It garnered four-star reviews from Starburst Magazine, SFX Magazine and several other outlets including reviewers on TikTok and YouTube.

Mr Jain worked as an actuary in Bermuda from 2014 to 2017. After attending a screenwriting workshop by Craig Borten of Dallas Buyers Club fame in 2015, he decided to embark on a filmmaking career.

He has written and produced various documentaries on topics including modern-day slavery and road safety.

The documentary A Piece of the Rock, about Bermuda’s dangerous road conditions and driving habits, ended up becoming a campaign group and the official partner for Drive for Change — The Royal Gazette’s two-year road safety campaign.

Mr Jain has also taken on producing roles for narrative features such as Cold Meat starring Allen Leech who appeared in Downton Abbey, and Art of the Jump about parkour pioneer Sebastien Foucan.
