Almost 100 performers entertained residents with classical pieces at an outdoor event to mark the 50th anniversary of a charity which supports young musicians.

The “Music in the Park” concert at Tunes filled Victoria Park celebrated the golden anniversary of the Menuhin Foundation.

The tribute was held in honour of famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who started the organisation in 1976.

It was the first time the charity had hosted a musical event outdoors and Verde Brown, its chairwoman, thanked the organisation’s music teachers, dedicated parents, board of trustees and volunteers who supported the concert.

Many volunteers who were past students of the foundation’s Primary 4 programme attended the event.

“We refer to this as being part of the Menuhin family,” Ms Brown added.

Four orchestras, which included the charity’s first, its intermediate and youth orchestra, performed in front of a big crowd.

An adult string ensemble as well as five string quartets and two string trios also entertained the audience.

Julianna Tothong and Dylan Jeffery, two violin soloists who were standout performers in the foundation’s scholarship programme, played pieces.

The event offered an opportunity to highlight the efforts of veteran music teachers Kerry Haslam and Alison Johnstone, who has been teaching music at the organisation for more than 30 years.

Music teachers Benjamin Wu and Johanna Pino Gonzalez were also recognised for their efforts.

Ms Johnstone, a cello teacher, said: “It’s nice to see all social demographics come together and it was nice to see them play together.

“Students from all different schools — we have government and private schools — they all come together on Saturdays when we have rehearsals and it’s great to see everyone here today.”

Mr Wu, who is a conductor of the youth orchestra at the charity, was impressed by the performances.

“It looks like the children are having a lot of fun and all of my students have done a fantastic job today,” he said.

Graham Maule, whose daughter, Camryn, plays the cello, attended the concert to support her.

“Today was about hearing her play the cello and I’m proud that she is from a family of musicians,” he added.

Walter Correia, whose daughter, Bella, plays the violin, said: “I think the children did an amazing job and I think that shows that they have worked hard for what they are doing.

“I am very proud of my daughter.”

Mr Corriea, who is also an executive of the foundation, spoke of the positive impact music can have on children.

He added: “It helps them to associate things and learn how to work with other children and other people.

“I think it helps them creatively and even mathematically.”

Ms Brown said that the foundation was planning a showcase for June 27.

“We are excited to feature the best of our students and give them a platform to let their light shine,” she added.

The organisation is also making preparations for its annual concert on June 14 at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium at CedarBridge Academy, where students of the charity’s primary school programme will perform.
