Dancers set to perform at Disney World
A group of Bermudian dancers are fine-tuning their moves in preparation for a performance at Disney World this summer.
The group of 24 from DanceSations School of Dance, based on Reid Street, will showcase a soca-themed piece choreographed by Sacha Dill for Dance the Magic on July 18.
Holly Pacheco, the founder and director of the school, said: “They wanted us to bring some of our culture from Bermuda and we are performing that on the Nemo stage at Animal Kingdom.”
The following day, the dancers — who are between the ages of 10 and 18 — will take part in a parade.
Ms Pacheco said it would be the largest group of dancers the school has taken overseas.
Staff, parents and alumni will accompany the dancers to Florida, with the entire travelling party expected to number about 50.
During the trip, the group will also take part in a workshop called The Disney Imagination with cast members from the renowned resort.
“They are going to learn pieces that are performed around the park,” said Ms Pacheco.
Dancers from the school took part in Dance the Magic in 2016 and Ms Pacheco highlighted the benefits of making a return.
“Disney is a huge company so it gives them a big opportunity to be on the world stage,” she said.
“It really is great to represent Bermuda in a good way”.
Giana Romeo, who is part of the senior company at the dance school, said she was “really excited to be performing at Disney”.
“I joined the senior company about five years ago and I’ve been to Florida but that was to take classes,” she added.
“We are really excited to be in the parade but I'm also excited to meet the other people who will be coming from other studios.”
Giana said that she had one more year before graduating from the school and intended to continue dancing beyond that.
“I feel like it is a really good opportunity to get more exposure at Disney … to meet new people because you never know who you’re dancing in front of,” she added.
Alexa Correia is looking forward to the opportunity to perform before a large audience.
She said: “I am looking forward to meeting new people also and I am excited to see the other performances because we will get to see those other pieces from around the world.”
Alexa said she was also excited about the trip since the acts at Disney were “more musical theatre and acting and Broadway kinds of performances”.
Another dancer, Aliana Burchall, believes the opportunity will create “lifelong memories” for her and her friends.
Ms Pacheco said that the school decided to perform a soca-themed combination of songs, which will last around three minutes.
She said the parade’s theme this year was Toy Story and the DanceSations team would perform to the song You’ve Got A Friend In Me.
“These guys are professionals … they catch on really quick,” Ms Pacheco added.
“We learnt the Toy Story dance within … just two classes so we’re now cleaning it up,” Ms Correia said.
The dancers will leave Bermuda on July 15.
